Christopher O'Donnell was one of the stars of the 150th National Track and Field Championships which was held in Morton Stadium in Santry on Sunday last. The 25 year old Grange man was running in his 6th national senior 400m track championship and he was in razor-sharp form, conditions were far from ideal with gusting winds and a wet track making things rather unpleasant. O'Donnell faced a formidable quality field of 400m runners including 2 former national champions at the distance and the national record holder Brian Gregan. The tall and strong North Sligo man kept his powder dry until he was coming around the final bend he then went into overdrive, the composure power and strength that he showed in that last 100m was something to behold, the Tokyo Olympian pulled totally away from his competitors as he came through the finish line in a fast time of 45.97 sec for his 5th national 400m title. Callum Baird Ballymena and Antrim AC was 2nd in 46.88 sec and Brian Gregan Cloniffe Harriers 3rd in 46.96.
