Carney And Murphy Win Gold And Silver In National Masters

The National masters track and field championships took place at the indoor arena in Athlone on Sunday last. The championship caters for all athletes from the age of 35 years to 80 plus, in all the track events from 60m to 3k and all the field events except Javelin or Discus.

North Sligo AC had 3 athletes competing in these championships Michael Carney, Eamon Murphy, and Trish Lee. Lee was the first club athlete in action, running her very first indoor race she competed in the 1500m over 50 category and put in a fine performance in a very high-quality race, she finished 4th and really enjoyed the experience finishing in 5 min 30 secs.

Murphy was the 2nd club athlete to see action, competing in the 1500m over 55 category he set a strong pace leading his category until the last 120 metres when Michael Counsel from Trim AC edged ahead and won the race in 4 min 36.83 with Murphy maintaining his high standard taking the silver in 4 min 38.45 secs.

Michael Carney the North Sligo AC seniors coach was next in action running in the 1500m over 70 category, Carney who won the over 45 1500m metre national title 25 years ago concentrated on his coaching duties at the club since then and less on his own athletic ambitions. The North Sligo man stayed in 3rd position for the first 300m and then moved into the lead, he gradually increased his pace and pulled away from his pursuers, coming up to the 800m mark he had about 30metres to spare over his nearest pursuer he continued his relentless drive as he came through the finish line in a very fast time of 5 min 44.31 sec with Brian McGrath Le Cheile AC just over 17 secs back in 6 min 01.39 secs and Conor Cooney Drogheda And District AC 3rd in 6 min 09.92 sec.

Eamon Murphy was in action later on in the evening running in the over 55 3k, showing no signs of his exertions earlier that day he came from 5th position with 200m to go to finish 2nd in a good time of 9 min 54.12 sec less than one second behind race winner Francis Marsh North Down who recorded 9 min 53.13 sec with Brendan Donagher Naomh Mhurire 3rd in 9 min 55.51 sec, this was another superb performance from this cross-country international whose passion and enthusiasm for athletics shows no signs of dimming.
