Indoor joy for North Sligo AC Seniors at Connacht Indoors in Athlone


The Connacht Indoor juvenile, senior and masters Track and Field Championships were held in Athlone on Sunday last. A big number of athletes from all over the providence descended on this magnificence venue to test their speed and stamina against the best in the region.


The first two athlethes in action for North Sligo Athletics Club were Valeria Petrova and Marita McMorrow who were competing in the 1500m. McMorrow finished 2nd in the over 35 category with a strong run in a time of 5 min 31 sec. Petrova was a little below her best but finished well in a time of 5 min 45 sec.

Three club members took part in the mens 1500m. Niall Canning was a revelation running in his first ever indoor race. He finished 1st in the Senior mens category with a scorching last lap to finish in 4 min 36 sec. Craig Brennan also a first timer in an indoor running competition had a good run to win the over 50 category in 4 min 52 sec and Jimmy Currid showed good resilience to finish 2nd in the over 50 section in 5 min 40 sec.

Trish Lee had to wait until after lunch time to compete in the 3k. She ran a good tactical race to finish 1st in the over 50 caterory in a time of 11 min 10 secs. About 50 mins later she was in action in the 800m where she was just nicked on the line for the gold medal in the over 50 section to finish 2nd in 2 min 48 sec.


Eamon Murphy put in a good shift in the mens 800m and was rewarded with a silver medal in the over 50 section in a time of 2 min 18 sec.


One of the final events on the track was the mens 4 x 200m relay. Niall Canning, Jimmy Currid, Eamon Murphy and Craig Brennan combined to finish 2nd in a time of 1 min 56 sec.
