Murphy Gives A Masters Performance In National Masters Cross-country

A North Sligo masters men team travelled to Gowran Kilkenny to take part in the National masters over 35 7k cross-country championships on Sunday last. Conditions were excellent on this dry fast course which saw a huge entry strive for individual and team medals in the different age categories. The local athletic club Gowran AC put in a huge effort to organize the juvenile programme and the four senior races, their efforts were rewarded as the programme went like clockwork on this excellent course.

Aiden McMoreland put in an excellent performance covering the 7k in 24 min 43 sec to finish 45th and first of the North Sligo team, Gary Higgins finished five seconds further back in 48th position another good performance from this ironman. Eamon Murphy put in the best performance of the team finishing 2nd in the over 55 category and 60th overall in a time of 25min 15 sec to win his 3rd national medal in the space of a week.

Just a week earlier Murphy won silver in the National Indoor track and field championship in Athlone in the over 55 1500m and the 3k a great athlete feat indoor and outdoor. Eamon McAndrew was the final member of the scoring team to finish in the 74th position not his best performance by his own high standards, but his efforts put the team into 8th position in this top-quality race. Alan Wallace ran one of his best cross-country races so far finishing 74th in 25 min 53 sec and Peter Gallagher running in his first national race finished strongly in 94th position.
